New Audience: Students

This year we began using Artful Online to develop pre-teaching learning objects for students. What can we create to spark the interest of students before a teaching artist visits?  What can students see beforehand that would boost the effect of a videoconference experience?

For Middle School Students in Austin, Minnesota, we created pre-teaching resources with which the teachers and students interacted before artist visits.

In one example, a videoconference lesson was video recorded and then selected clips were built into an online page.  Students reviewed the clips to prepare for a second lesson with the teaching artists who next worked with them live in Austin.

In a second example, students reviewed West African dance steps taught by a teaching artist at a professional development opportunity for adults.  That online video footage was linked to an email to the teachers in Austin, who shared this with students before they even met the dance artist.  When she taught them through videoconferencing, some of the students surprised her by showing her the very steps she was prepared to teach.
